The data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) provides a static photograph of the progressive exit from the pandemic. Although the data was still behind the figures collected before Covid in 2021, they show a trajectory of recovery with an increase in trips by 40.7% compared to 2020, a year in which mobility was reduced almost by the whole. Like the numbers of trips, the expense associated with them also grows.
During 2021, Spaniards made a total of 142.9 million trips, the figure represents an increase of 40.7% compared to the previous year. Of these millions of trips, the trend was clearly towards national destinations, which accounted for 95% of trips, therefore, only 5% ended up outside Spanish borders.
Although the overnight stays associated with the 142.9 million trips decreased by 26.9%, reaching 626.1 million nights , they underlined the Special Data preference of the national destination during 2021. Travel within the borders accounted for 89% of all those overnight stays, while those who ended up abroad only accounted for 11% of the overnight stays.
The communities that welcomed the most visitors were Andalusia, Catalonia and the Valencian Community.
The panorama drawn by the INE data shows a clear trend towards non-work trips , which accounted for 85% of trips in 2021. Those that occurred for leisure accounted for 48.4% of the total, while caused by visits to family or friends reached 36.6%.
The Statistics Institute draws a more detailed picture by placing 62.8% of trips as the destination of non-market accommodation, that is, those in which economic transactions are not carried out, such as, for example, second homes. In fact, these trips account for 63.9% of total overnight stays .
Of all of them, the communities that welcomed the most visitors were Andalusia , which was the destination of 18.2% of the trips; followed by Catalonia, hosting 14.4% of the displaced; and the Valencian Community, arrival point for 11.7% of the total visitors. The communities whose residents made the most trips were Catalonia (17.6%), Community of Madrid (16.7%) and Andalusia (15.8%).
